Is my .slk file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your SYLK file is read and converted entirely in your browser, on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server, so even sensitive spreadsheet data stays with you.

What is the SYLK (.slk) format?

SYLK, short for SYmbolic LinK, is an old plain-text spreadsheet format from the Multiplan and early Excel era. Each line is a record, and cells are stored as `C;` records that carry a column, a row and a value.

What does the conversion produce?

It produces a single Markdown pipe table. The converter reads every `C;` cell record, rebuilds the grid from the row and column coordinates, and treats the first row as the table header.

No. SYLK can store an expression alongside a cell, but the converter keeps only the cell value, not the formula behind it. A `=SUM(...)` cell comes through as the number it resolved to, with the formula dropped.

Is formatting preserved?

No. Fonts, colours, bold, alignment and number formats are dropped. A SYLK cell formatted as currency or a percentage becomes its raw text value in the table, so the figures stay but the styling does not.

Which apps create .slk files?

Excel and many older spreadsheet programs can export SYLK, and it still turns up as a portable, text-only way to move tabular data between applications.

Is the output good for LLMs and RAG?

Yes. A plain Markdown table is easy for language models to read, and you can turn on optional cleanup, YAML front matter and RAG chunk export to prepare the result for retrieval pipelines.

What if the file has empty cells?

Missing cells are filled in as blank columns so the table stays rectangular and every row lines up with the header.
