Is my .dif file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your DIF file is read and parsed entirely in your browser, on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing about its contents is sent anywhere.

DIF stands for Data Interchange Format, a plain-text spreadsheet exchange format from the VisiCalc era. It was designed so one spreadsheet program could hand a grid of values to another in a format both could read.

What does the conversion produce?

A Markdown pipe table. The converter locates the DATA section, walks its tuples row by row, and lays the values out as table rows. The first row becomes the header.

Are both numbers and text kept?

Yes. DIF marks each cell as either numeric or string, and both are preserved: numeric values are read from the tuple itself, and string values are taken from the following line with the surrounding quotes stripped.

The header and metadata records that describe the file (vectors, tuples, labels and similar) and any formatting are not carried over. Only the actual cell values from the DATA section end up in the table.

Which applications create .dif files?

Many spreadsheet programs can export to DIF as a legacy interchange option, so you may meet a .dif file when moving older data between tools. It is a text format, so it opens in any editor too.

Is the Markdown good for LLMs and RAG?

Yes. A clean pipe table is easy for language models to read, and the optional cleanup, front matter and chunk export make the output ready to drop straight into a RAG pipeline.

Does it work offline?
